Effect of Hemicellulose Molecular Weight on Bonding Properties in Biobased Wood Adhesives

Today, the most commonly used adhesives in wood industry are fossil-based, but search for new, renewable and less hazardous, resources is intensifying. Hemicelluloses show promising bonding performance when as a component adhesives. Since batch-to-batch variations can affect use of hemicelluloses large-scale production, we have investigated effect hemicellulose molecular weight on important adhesive properties, such viscosity bond strength, by using locust bean gum model varying through hydrolysis. Results showed that there nonlinear proportionality between strength weight. In range study, 70–1460 kDa, anoptimum was achieved with intermediate weights, 320 530 especially considering applicability strength. Adhesives lower 70 150 did not exhibit sufficient cohesive strength; therefore, lower. The higher weight, 1460 difficult to apply, since its maximum solid content very low, 5 wt %.
